I'm a Northerner. Most of the people I know are Northerners. What I am having trouble with is the question - why are we Northerners?
To put a little flesh on this question, it occurs to me that it might be preferable to be a Southerner. If indeed it is preferable to be a Southerner, why do we persist in being Northerners.
To explore this matter a few preliminaries are in order. These include, setting out the distinctions between Northerners and Southerners, setting out what makes one status 'better' than another, and identifying the obstacles to a change in status. The crux though will be some idle speculation, hopefully well reasoned, that explains why so many Northerners continue along that path. And for a sneak preview of my tentative conclusion, let me just say that I advance a Darwinian rationale.
to be completed
